DJI Mini 2 vs Mavic Mini
When people are looking for their first drone, they often have two main considerations; price and size. Everyone wants the best possible drone for the least amount of money.
And if the drone can be small and easy to pack and transport, that’s helpful too. That’s why people are often comparing the DJI Mini 2 with the DJI Mavic Mini, otherwise known as the Mavic Air, and often referred to as the DJI Mavic Mini 2. They sound similar, but they are two separate models.

The DJI Mini 2 is the smallest drone you can get from DJI. It comes in at 249 grams. That means it fits under the registration-free category for drones. If you have a drone weighing 250 grams or more, you have to register it with the FAA, which is easy and only costs a few dollars.
Still, the smaller model is better for those looking for simple logistics. The small drone can fit safely into any backpack or purse without taking up very much room.
It’s easy to bring on any type of trip, from backpacking and camping to global travel. The lightweight means it won’t weigh down your backpack on long excursions.
On the other hand, the Mavic Air 2 weighs 570 grams or about twice that of the Mini 2. This is still lighter than many of the other models offered by DJI and other brands. The packed size is a bit bigger than the Mini 2 but still very portable.
DJI Mini 2 accessories will also be smaller, keeping the packed size small in your bag.
Based on the size, if you plan to take it on backcountry excursions, the lighter weight and smaller size make the Mini 2 a more ideal drone.
The DJI Mini 2 can shoot amazing photos and videos. Video is taken in 4K at 30 FPS, while photos are 12 MP. They can be taken in either JPEG or raw formats. The camera has a 4x zoom.
While the camera offers great quality, it’s not nearly as good as many other models, including the Mavic Air 2. The Mavic Air 2 can capture 4K video at 60 FPS, double that of the Mini 2.
Also, the photos taken on the Mavic Air 2 are 48 megapixels, offering a near professional-quality image. Based on camera quality, those looking to move towards professional photography are going to want to invest in the camera coming with the Mavic Air 2.
How They Fly
Both models have five of the same smart flying QuickShot modes. These include Dronie, Helix, Circle, Rocket, and Boomerang. These make it easier to fly your drone while trying to capture different types of images or footage.
However, the Mavic Air 2 has an additional flight mode, called Asteroid. And the added Spotlight mode helps to stay locked onto a subject while the drone is flying along. In general, the additional flight modes give the Mavic 2 in upper hand for those looking to craft truly unique shots.
The Mini 2 can fly for up to 31 minutes on a fully charged battery. On the Mavic Air 2, however, you can fly for 34 minutes before changing the battery. This might not seem like much, but when it comes to drones, three minutes is a big deal. The Mavic Air 2 can also fly quite a bit faster than the Mini 2.
Choosing Your First Drone
So DJI Mini 2 vs Mavic Mini, which one is right for you? The main benefit of the Mini 2 is the lower price and the greater portability. But if you want increased performance and superior camera quality, the Mavis Air 2 is the better choice, if you can afford it.
